5th Grade Learns About Lewis and Clark

Mrs. Stott’s 5th grade class received a tub of artifacts from the AEA. We opened up the tub to have show and tell which turned in to inquiry of different uses for the pans, reasons they wore certain clothing, and about the different materials they took. Wanting to learn more we invited our local expert, our school librarian Mrs. Wilber, to speak to the fifth grade.
Did you know Lewis and Clark sent President Jefferson a prairie dog so that he would have a present from their exploration of the Louisiana Purchase? We learned that and many other interesting things when Mrs. Wilber came to speak to us. Mrs. Wilber brought a trunk of interesting artifacts she uses from Golden Hills. She began giving tours during the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark. She still gives tours for the Council Bluffs Convention and Visitor Bureau. We were amazed at the mold of the grizzly bear foot which was bigger than our heads. She also had a costume that was like the one that Captain Meriwether Lewis could have worn. We enjoyed looking at the early navigational devices, such as a compass and sextant. We are continuing to learn more about Lewis and Clark and their adventure through the books that Mrs. Wilber left for us to read in our classroom.
