The initial meeting of the Riverside Community School Board of Education Suggestion Review Committee was held on April 2, 2012 at the Carson Community Center. Dr. Sutton called the meeting to order at 7:01 p.m. Dr. Sutton welcomed the members of the committee and then reiterated the task and responsibility to the board. Dr. Sutton also explained the initial agenda and excused himself in order to allow the committee to meet and discuss the agenda items.
The Suggestion Review Committee members present at the beginning of the meeting were: Angela Beebe, Bruce Bentley, Kesley Conover, Chuck Eyerly, Annette Frain, Terry Gleaves, Duane Laughlin, Jeremy Perkins, Charles Pleak, Judy Pleak, Lisa Putnam, Marsha Sternberg and Matt Wilber. Larry Plagman arrived at approximately 7:40.
Selection of Committee Chairperson – It was moved to appoint Matt Wilber as Chairperson of the Suggestion Review Committee, a nomination which he respectfully declined. It was moved and seconded that Charles Pleak be appointed Chairperson. Motion carried unanimously.
Selection of Committee Secretary – It was moved and seconded that Angela Beebe be appointed Committee Secretary. Motion carried unanimously.
Suggestion Box Collection Date – Discussion was held regarding the suggestion boxes placed in businesses and the city hall buildings in Carson, Macedonia and Oakland. In a review of the locations cited by Dr. Sutton, the Committee determined a need for additional boxes to be placed in the five banks within the communities as well as Ruback’s and Oakland Pharmacy in Oakland. The Committee Secretary will contact the additional businesses to gain their approval to place the additional boxes as well as contact Dr. Sutton to pick up the boxes.
Discussion was held regarding the procurement of a post office box to allow people to mail their suggestions. It was determined the Committee Secretary will check with Dr. Sutton to clear the rental of a post office box in Carson. If cleared, the Secretary will be in charge of picking up any suggestions mailed to the P.O. box.
It was moved and seconded that the suggestion boxes be picked up on April 30, 2012. Motion carried unanimously.
Once the P.O. box has been rented, the Secretary will print and post additional information to the suggestion boxes citing the address for mailed suggestions as well as the April 30, 2012 deadline. Additionally, the Secretary will request the minutes of this meeting be posted on the school website to inform the public of the changes in the current suggestion process. Matt Wilber will write an article outlining where the suggestion boxes are located, where suggestions can be mailed as well as the deadline. The article will be submitted to the Journal Herald as well as the Neola Gazette, as these are the local papers serving the Riverside School District.
Volunteers to pick up the suggestion boxes on the deadline date were: Bruce Bentley – Macedonia, Jeremy Perkins – Oakland and Matt Wilber – Carson. It was determined that suggestion boxes and mailed suggestions will not be opened until the next Committee meeting.
Additional Forums – It was moved and seconded to table this agenda item pending the tabulation and review of the submitted suggestions. Motion carried unanimously.
Other Items of Discussion – Duane Laughlin reported he had the opportunity to tour the school at Corning, Iowa where an older school had been remodeled and upgraded. He asked the Committee
whether it would be advantageous to look into what Corning did with their building in an effort to educate the public on other options that may be available. The consensus of the Committee was that we need to tabulate and review the public suggestions prior to determining whether such options need to be reviewed as part of the Committee Report to the Riverside Board.
Next Meeting – The next meeting will be held at the Carson Community Center on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 7:00 pm.
It was moved and seconded to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried unanimously.
Respectfully Submitted,
Angela Beebe, Secretary
Suggestion Review Committee
