Everyone has a Why.  Why do you get up in the morning?  Why does your organization exist?  Your Why is the purpose, cause, or belief that inspires you to do what you do.  When you think, act and communicate starting with Why, you can inspire others.  Knowing your Why gives you a filter to make choices, at work and at home, that will help you find greater fulfillment in all that you do.

Why are some organizations more innovative, more influential and more profitable than others?  Why do some command greater loyalty from customers and employees?  We know What we do, we know How we do it, now we need to know Why we do what we do.  A Why is a blueprint; set of values and beliefs through which to make decisions that last.  It is only for those organizations committed to positive change and long-term success.  When an organization starts with Why, they stand for something bigger than any product, result or metric.  Their brand has real meaning and true value in the world.  They are better able to attract and unite employees, customers and partners.  Their people love coming to work.

Let us start our journey to Why!!  Let us a start a journey to define “We R Riverside”!!

Bullying and Harassment

Law and Definition According to Iowa Code section 280.28, defines harassment and bullying as: “Any electronic, written, verbal, or physical act or conduct toward a student which is based on any actual or perceived trait or characteristic of the student and which creates an objectively hostile school environment that meets one or more of the following conditions:

1. Places the student in reasonable fear of harm to the student's person or property.

2. Has a substantially detrimental effect on the student's physical or mental health.

3. Has the effect of substantially interfering with a student's academic performance.

 4. Has the effect of substantially interfering with the student's ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.”

"Trait or characteristic of the student" includes but is not limited to age, color, creed, national origin, race, religion, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical attributes, physical or mental ability or disability, ancestry, political party preference, political belief, socioeconomic status, or familial status

 Tips:

• A formal written complaint is not needed to investigate a potential harassment or bullying situation. As soon as a school hears about a bullying and harassment incident it should be investigated. Schools should follow their bullying and harassment board policy when investigating.

• Never have the bully and the individual being bullied sit down together to discuss the issue.

• Review the district bullying and harassment definition, policy and procedures with students, staff and parents each year.

Fee Reminders

Every school year we get questions regarding fees.  Please be aware that the district does not have a registration fee but does charge a curriculum fee.  Iowa Code does state that a Board of Education is authorized to rent curriculum (textbooks) at a reasonable fee set by the board.  Under Iowa Code fees are expressly authorized and can be charged for: textbooks, school supplies, summer school programs, driver education programs, transportation, eye protective devices, ear protective devices, school meals and nonresident student tuition.  A full waiver of all fees shall be granted if the student or student’s family are eligible for Free Lunch, transportation assistance or the student is in foster care.  A partial fee waiver is granted for a student or student’s family that qualify for Reduced Lunch.

Building Progress-Sports Complex

The Board has approved a work agreement with B & D Diamond Pro to complete the infields and warning tracks of the baseball and softball fields.  This work is now underway.  The corrective action on the outfields will also be started this month to make sure the fields will be ready to go for the upcoming seasons.

Building Progress-Safe Room Addition

Anderson Construction has reported that the project should be completed in three weeks and we will have no issues with moving the 6th Grade for the start of the 2018-2019 school year.
