Character Education Workshop--Bulldog POWER

Approximately 25 staff and community members met for three days with facilitators from the Ray Center to start work on developing a comprehensive character development program for the Riverside Community School District and Riverside Community.   The workshop was a great success and much work was completed to help us move forward in this area.  I would like to thank the Ray Center for the grant and excellent facilitation.  I would also like to thank the staff and community members who spent the three days working diligently on this project. Follow-up meetings have already been scheduled. Much more information will be presented to the entire staff and community as the project rolls out this fall!!

Credit Recovery Classroom-New for 2018-2019

The Credit Recovery Classroom will be offered for high school students and is targeting students at-risk of dropping out or who have dropped out and want to return to complete their high school education.  The Credit Recovery Classroom will utilize an online credit recovery program (Edmentum) that gives high school students who have failed a class the opportunity to redo coursework or retake a course through alternate means.  Thereby avoiding failure and allowing the student to earn the academic credit.  We will also target returning dropouts—resident students who withdrew from traditional high school and have not completed the required high school curriculum. The Credit Recovery Classroom will operate in a classroom at the Intermediate School in Carson for the 2018-2019 school year.  The Credit Recovery Classroom will be offered in the morning and be staffed by a teacher certified in Grade 9-12 Subject-Area Content and Special Education.  The program will be funded through the At-Risk/Dropout Prevention Grant.

Use of Cell Phone Policy-New for 2018-2019

Riverside Community School District understands that we are living in a society where cell phones and digital devices have become a part of our everyday lives. We also understand that above all, the education of our students is a primary goal. Staff, parents, school staff, and students recognize and accept that there is a time and place for the use of electronic devices. It is also believed, that the use of cell phones and digital devices in school is a PRIVILEGE and not a right. Staff reserves the right to limit or control the use of cell phones and digital devices during the school day.  Students may possess cellular phones and portable digital devices on school property, while in school-owned vehicles and while students are attending or engaged in school-sponsored activities, subject to limitations.   These limitations are defined in a new policy that will be included in our handbooks.
