Michaela Vlcek, a paraeducator at Riverside CSD, has become the first graduate of the district’s Teacher and Paraeducator Registered Apprenticeship (TPRA) Grant Program. Her achievement marks a milestone in the district’s efforts to support paraeducators in completing their degrees and transitioning into full-time teaching roles.
The TPRA program is designed to help paraeducators earn teaching degrees while continuing to serve their school community. Vlcek’s success paves the way for others who hope to follow the same pathway from paraeducator to licensed teacher.
Throughout her journey, Vlcek was mentored by Riverside kindergarten teacher Jill Weathers, who served as her cooperating teacher. Weathers provided guidance and encouragement as Vlcek balanced coursework, professional responsibilities, and preparation for student teaching.
“It’s been amazing to see Michaela take this next step toward becoming a teacher,” said Weathers. “She is always advocating for students and making sure their voices are heard. I know she is going to make a fantastic teacher. She’s been such a great teammate to work with and truly an asset to our district.”
Vlcek recently graduated from Western Governors University and has begun student teaching this fall. After that, she will be offered a full-time contract as an elementary special education teacher at Riverside CSD.
“Participating in the TPRA program has been an incredible opportunity,” Vlcek said. “I never would have returned to college to pursue a career in teaching without the support of this program and Riverside. It has allowed me to continue working as a paraeducator while completing my coursework, and now I’m able to maintain employment while fulfilling my student teaching requirements.”
