CARSON, IA — Riverside Community School District Board President JT Oltman has released the following statement today:
“The Riverside Community School District stands at an important crossroads—one that calls for shared vision, unity, and a commitment to safe, supportive schools for all students. The November 4 voted Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (VPPEL) proposal is not just about facility and equipment upgrades; it’s about continuing to invest in the long-term success of our district and the wellbeing of our students and staff.
If approved, the VPPEL would provide $595,000 a year for essential facility repairs, safety improvements, and technology upgrades. These needs were clearly identified in our 2024 facility study. It’s important to note that these funds would not be used to build new facilities. Instead, they would be dedicated solely to maintaining and improving our existing schools—addressing identified needs such as secure entrances, fire alarm systems, ADA accessibility, classroom electrical safety, and heating and cooling systems.
Funds would also support new buses, updated technology for students and staff, interactive classroom panels, and expanded telehealth mental health services.
This levy is a fiscally responsible way to protect our community’s investment in our schools while providing learning environments that are safe, efficient, and future ready. The proposed levy would add $1.34 per $1,000 of taxable property value. For a home with an assessed value of $200,000, this would amount to a property tax increase of about $120.61 per year, or $10.05 per month.
We are grateful to all community members who have taken the time to attend meetings, ask questions, and provide input throughout this process.
Together, we can ensure Riverside students continue to learn and grow in schools that reflect the high standards and strong values of our community.”
