CDC Guidance for 2021-2022 school year

CDC Isolation/Quarantine Information Update

On Friday, February 25, 2022 the CDC updated its masking guidance for public and private school systems. The CDC no longer recommends universal indoor mask wearing in K-12 and early education settings in areas with a low or medium COVID-19 community transmission.

Order: Wearing of face masks while on conveyances and at transportation hubs | Quarantine | CDC

In areas with high community levels, the CDC continues to recommend wearing a mask indoors, including in K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. The CDC has provided guidance on how it is measuring COVID-19 community levels across the country by counties. The following link can be used to search specific counties.

In conjunction with this general recommendation, the CDC is no longer requiring the wearing of masks on buses or vans operated by public or private school systems, including early care and education/child programs. Requirements for mask wearing on public conveyances and indoor transportation hubs remain in place.

Finding a COVID-19 Vaccine or Vaccine Booster

  • Check your local pharmacy’s website to see if vaccination walk-ins or appointments are available.

  • Check with your healthcare provider about whether they offer COVID-19 vaccination.

  • Contact your state or local health department for more information.

Main points of guidance:

  • Students benefit from in-person learning, and safely returning to in-person instruction in the fall 2021 is a priority.

  • While not required, Vaccination is currently the leading public health prevention strategy to end the COVID-19 pandemic.  Promoting vaccination can help schools safely return to in-person learning as well as extracurricular activities and sports.

  • A layered approach to mitigation is needed: Screening, testing, ventilation, handwashing and respiratory etiquette, staying home when sick and getting tested, contact tracing in combination with quarantine and isolation, and cleaning and disinfection are also important layers of prevention to keep schools safe.

  • IPHD recommends that COVID-19 positive and symptomatic children and school staff should be excluded from school (Quarantine/Isolation). Exposed students or staff no longer are required to be excluded unless they show symptoms or test positive for COVID-19.

Please be advised that any Disease Mitigation Plan can be revised at any time.
